BISON PRECAST UNITS INSTALLED AT UK’S NEWEST RAILWAY STATION
700 tonnes of locally manufactured concrete units from building product specialists Forterra form a major part of the UK’s newest railway station, at Ilkeston in Derbyshire.
Ilkeston Railway Station, which officially opened in 2017 and is the first railway station to operate in the town for more than half a century, will reduce commuter times to nearby cities and is expected to boost the town’s economy, serving up to a quarter of a million passengers a year.
Forterra’s precast concrete specialists, based at the company’s facility in Somercotes, 10 miles from the station site, designed, manufactured and supplied all 230 concrete units that make up the 100 metre platforms of the station.
The platform units were installed by construction specialists Galliford Try, whose team worked day and night to ensure the units were fitted safely and to schedule.
Matt Rippin, Project Manager for Galliford Try, said, “The installation of the platforms at Ilkeston’s new Railway Station went entirely as expected, and we would recommend the chosen supplier, Forterra, for this type of large scale project involving the design, manufacture and supply of precast concrete units.”
Martin Bolton, National Sales Manager for Forterra, said, “This was a major project for our experts at Somercotes, involving bespoke designs for the two new platforms, and we’re delighted that the station has now opened. The fact that the station has improved public transport to communities local to our Somercotes facility makes it all the more satisfying.”
Forterra provides comprehensive engineered solutions for all precast concrete needs, including flooring, box culverts, retaining walls, and bridge deck systems. The company offers design and technical support to ensure quality and value to its customers.
