Sport City Project
Bison’s Crosswall and Hollowcore concrete products were specified by Countryside Properties for an innovative project at Sport City in Manchester. The development of two circular shaped buildings, one 10 and one 7 storeys, will house a total of 111 one and two-bed apartments. Bison’s design and production flexibility was evident as the team worked to integrate their standard Hollowcore and Cross Wall products into the circular building, whilst achieving the essential structural tie detail necessary to ‘stitch’ the building together.
Trevor Stack, Construction Director at Countryside Properties, comments: “This was a challenging project which was conceived and designed to look completely different and push design boundaries. We specified Bison’s products as their team were able to offer us high-quality products quickly and provided practical solutions to the issues which the shape of the structure raised, such as bespoke models for the external wall panels. “The delivery and high quality finish of the products was impressive, and the project moved along quickly thanks to additional aids such as the ‘lifting hooks’ provided by Bison.” This speed of construction demonstrated concrete effectively meeting the demands of offsite construction, in terms of delivery, flexibility and quality. Concrete was specified as opposed to other materials due to its strength, durability and inherent fire resistance.
Iain Fleming, Associate Director at Countryside Properties, comments: “Concrete was specified for this project due to speed of construction compared to traditional build methods. We decided to work with Bison as their solution was also the most cost-competitive, and the fact that they are a respected name with great experience in the industry and proven past projects were also contributing factors. “The build managers were pleased with how the project progressed and have worked well with the Bison team.”
